Civil Engineering Virtual Internship
Civil Engineering Virtual Internship
Welcome to your virtual internship in Civil Engineering
Civil Engineering is a field that integrates science, creativity, technology, and innovation to design and construct infrastructure that improves communities and the environment. This internship provides aspiring civil engineers with an immersive experience, offering an introduction to the principles and practices of civil engineering.
Throughout this five day internship, you will participate in both morning and afternoon sessions, gaining practical insights into key areas such as structural design, construction management, and sustainable infrastructure.
Key features
- Real life professional career simulation
- Meets international standards
- Provides practical exposure to civil engineering careers
- Fully online, interactive learning experience
- Includes consultations with industry professionals
- Self-printed certificates upon completion
- Internship duration: 5 days
- Suitable for students from 15 years and older
Aims of the internship
By the end of this internship, you will be able to:
- Explore various career specialisations within the civil engineering field and understand their functions.
- Identify civil engineering disciplines that align with personal interests and long-term career goals.
Who is this for?
This internship is suitable for high school students aged 15 years and older who are exploring careers in civil engineering and planning to pursue related university or college courses. It is also ideal for students who have completed high school and are looking for internship opportunities to gain practical experience in the field of civil engineering.
What will you be learning in this internship?
Day 1: Introduction to Civil Engineering (AM) and Client Services (PM)
In the morning session, interns will be introduced to the various departments within a civil engineering firm, including both civil and non-civil engineering departments. They will explore how these departments function and contribute to designing and maintaining infrastructure. The afternoon session will focus on client services, and the importance of communication and relationship management.
Day 2: Surveying (AM) and Project Management (PM)
The morning session will cover the surveying department, where interns will learn about surveying techniques, tools, and the role of accurate land measurement in civil engineering projects. In the afternoon session, the focus shifts to project management, introducing interns to planning, scheduling, and resource allocation.
Day 3: Construction Engineering (AM) and Water Resources (PM)
On the third day, the morning session will introduce interns to construction engineering, where they will learn about construction processes, working with contractors, and ensuring safety, efficiency, and sustainability in projects. The afternoon session will shift focus to water resources engineering, covering topics like water management, flood prevention, and wastewater treatment.
Day 4: Geotechnical (AM) and Environmental Engineering (PM)
The morning session will provide an overview of geotechnical engineering, teaching interns about soil and rock analysis, foundation design, and material selection for construction projects. The afternoon session will cover environmental engineering, where interns will learn about risk assessments, and designing facilities to minimise environmental impacts.
Day 5: Reflection (AM) and Final Assessment (PM)
On the final day, interns will reflect on their learning experiences. In the morning session, they will choose one department that resonates with them, conduct further research, and write a 300-word reflection explaining why this department is important in civil engineering. The afternoon session will conclude with a final assessment quiz consisting of 25 multiple-choice questions covering all the topics studied during the internship. Interns must achieve a pass mark of 80%, and they will have unlimited retake opportunities if necessary.
Certification
This internship meets international standards to reflect the diverse landscape of civil engineering as a global discipline. Upon successful completion, interns will receive a certificate of participation as proof of their internship.
